Angels have agreed to terms with LHH 1B Justin Bour, a source confirmed. It is a one-year deal. He can fill in for Albert Pujols when he needs to DH or take a day off.

Angels GM Billy Eppler would not confirm the signing of Justin Bour, as reported by Yahoo's Jeff Passan. Makes sense, though. LHH 1B who can fill in on days when Albert Pujols, 38 and coming off knee surgery, needs to DH or is relegated to the bench.

The Angels have agreed to terms with first baseman Justin Bour, which creates this obvious fallout: Albert Pujols is now a very expensive platoon first baseman, since Shohei Ohtani will be the DH. Trouble is, Pujols hasn't even hit lefties the past two seasons, with a .217/.284/.353 line. Pujols has three years left on his contract, but at some point -- soon -- the Angels have to decide whether he's really worth the roster spot.

Source: Angels agree with 1B Bour on 1-year deal

First baseman Justin Bour has agreed to a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels, a source confirmed to ESPN. Yahoo Sports first reported the deal, which could see Bour and Albert Pujols splitting time.

Brad Ausmus' most difficult task as Angels manager will be juggling Albert Pujols and Shohei Ohtani at DH. "There's going to be a balance," Ausmus said. "We don't expect Ohtani to be ready when the season (starts). There will be DH at-bats earlier in the season made available to (Pujols). And hopefully he gets off to a hot start. But for me, the bigger and more delicate balance is how often can (Pujols) go to first. That's really the most important thing based on the health of his knees."

Shohei Ohtani has displayed "great range of motion" in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, Angels GM Billy Eppler said. I asked Eppler if it was possible for Ohtani to get 500 to 600 plate appearances next season. "Too early to tell," he said. "We don't even have a hitting progression today. We won't be able to put that together until his late January assessment. And then we can start putting some pen to paper and write out his first marker."

Angels GM Billy Eppler, looking for lots of pitching and a starting catcher, said he was a little bit more active on the trade market than the free-agent market today. The Angels reportedly fell short on Patrick Corbin and Nathan Eovaldi, which at least shows they have been active. Eppler said he has deals in place that he could make. "We could kick a field goal if we wanted to, but let's go for a touchdown."

Cowart eyes Ohtani feat despite 'huge workload'

Kaleb Cowart, claimed by Seattle off waivers from the Angels, said he is excited about attempting to become the big league's second two-way player despite the inherent challenges.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

The Mariners announced Kaleb Cowart as an infielder and a pitcher. Looks like they're going to try him as a two-way player. Cowart was a really good pitcher in high school and has always had a big arm.

Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto really has a knack for acquiring former players. Today, he claimed Kaleb Cowart off waivers from the Angels, the team that made him the 18th pick in 2010. Cowart has evolved into a switch-hitting utility guy who can play 3B, 1B, 2B and LF.

New Rangers manager Chris Woodward will now have to face Shohei Ohtani often. He knew he could pitch, but didn't think he would become such a good hitter. "I wasn't convinced to start the year," Woodward said. "He proved me and a lot of people wrong."

Ex-Angels ace Richards agrees to Padres' deal

The Padres have agreed to a two-year contract with former Angels ace Garrett Richards, who is expected to miss the 2019 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Tommy La Stella slugged only .331 last year, but he got on base 34 percent of the time and is a left-handed bat with flexibility at 3B and 2B. He can compete for an everyday role with the Angels at either spot, depending on which one Zack Cozart plays. The others in the mix — Taylor Ward, David Fletcher and Luis Rengifo — are young and unproven.
