Darnold outduels Allen in battle of rookie QBs (1:35)

Bills rookie QB Josh Allen is setting records with his legs -- on Sunday, he became the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to run for at least 100 yards in back-to-back games -- but as the No. 7 overall pick said after a 27-23 loss to the Jets, the records don't matter if Buffalo isn't winning games. The Bills' offense needs more than only Allen's legs and likely won't get reinforcements until the offseason, when the futures of mainstay running back LeSean McCoy and tight end Charles Clay could be in doubt. Allen on Sunday surpassed McCoy for rushing yards this season, 490 to 479.

Bills RB LeSean McCoy left Sunday's game against the Jets with a hamstring injury in the first quarter. He was downgraded to out at the start of the second half. He finished the game with two carries for 1 yard.

With 87 rushing yards at halftime of Sunday's game against the Jets, Bills rookie QB Josh Allen has 321 rushing yards over the past three games, which is the most by any QB in a three-game span in the Super Bowl era (since 1966). Michael Vick previously held that mark with 294 in 2006. The Bills lead the Jets, 17-13, in a game that has been kept close by poor special-teams play from Buffalo, as well as two turnovers by Allen (an interception and fumble).

LeSean McCoy suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Jets and is questionable to return. McCoy had two carries for 1 yard before his injury.

Bills rookie slot cornerback Taron Johnson had shoulder surgery and is out indefinitely, coach Sean McDermott said. Johnson, a fourth-round pick, originally injured his shoulder in Week 1 and has played through it. McDermott said veteran safety Rafael Bush and others will be considered to fill that role.

Ref Ellison put on leave after Hughes allegation

The NFL on Tuesday placed umpire Roy Ellison on administrative leave as it continues to review a confrontation between Bills DE Jerry Hughes and Ellison after Sunday's game at Miami. Hughes will not be suspended, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The writing had been on the wall for Kelvin Benjamin's release Tuesday by the Bills for quite some time. He never produced anywhere near expectations after being acquired for third- and seventh- round picks last season. He and fellow veteran WR Andre Holmes, also released Tuesday, lost playing time in recent weeks to younger players. Benjamin was set for unrestricted free agency in the spring and had little chance of returning to Buffalo.
